And here, we have possibly the single most controversial strip in Red Ring’s decade-long run – and that’s really saying something. For anyone unaware, the Ouya was a Kickstarter-funded game console announced in 2012 that was intended to shake up the market by providing each of its games with a free-to-play preview before purchase. While the console would not be widely mocked until its botched release a year later, Red Ring fans at the time were still somewhat shocked and concerned that Shawn would include what appeared to be a blatant ad for the system in his strip, something he had never done before.
Shawn to this day denies that he had any financial stake in the Ouya, and that this was not an ad. Hard to entirely believe him with the mountains of evidence we now have, but I still believe Shawn was being honest in his heart.
